African Americans, who were always very talented artist, carpenters, woodworkers, craftsman, cooks, farmers, ship builders, masons, engineers, home builders and much, much more when they arrived in America.
Today, African Americans are at the top of many professions, from medical, sports and the arts to politics, banking, policing and technology. It was not always like this in the United States. See African American History below.
African-American history began in the US on August 20, 1619, when a group of “20 and odd” African captives, on board the White Lion ship, arrived in Virginia. The White Lion was an English privateer operating under a Dutch flag or letter of marque. These captives were originally from Luanda in the Kingdom of Ndongo in modern-day Angola.
They arrived in Old Point Comfort on the White Lion ship. Old Point Comfort is a point of land located (in the independent city of Hampton today) in the English colony of Virginia. This August 20, 1619 event marked the beginning of Black people being enslaved (African American slavery) in what would become the United States.
August 20, 2019 marked 400 years since “20 and odd” African captives from Angola, in West Africa, were sold to European slave traders and transported across the Atlantic and eventually ending in the colony of Virginia to work as slaves with little hope of true freedom. Once freed, African Americans have become professionals in virtually any and all local professions and local businesses.
